Drinking water from boreholes

Surface water analysis for fish growing

  • Fish growers should control fish pool/pond quality of the water, to prevent fish diseases.
  • In order to verify the quality of surface water, we recommend analysis of following indicators, for which limiting concentrations for salmonid waters and cyprinid waters are given in the Regulations of the Cabinet of Ministers of Latvia No. 118 (12.03.2002.) Appendix 3.:

  • Depending on the visual assessment of the surface water sample and / or owner’s complaints, you can choose parameters that are more relevant to each of individual cases.
  • The sample should be taken in a 1L plastic or glass bottle with a screw-on plastic cap. Hold the bottle vertically, immerse it below the water level and fill it with the water sample up to the top.

    When taking a sample, must be careful of turning water muddy what occurs when stepped into the water.

    The sample should be delivered to the laboratory within 12-16 hours.
    For dissolved oxygen measurments, it is necessary to deliver the sample as soon as possible to the laboratory on the same day as the sample was taken.


Swimming place surface water analysis

  • To check if you can safely swim in your bathing area, especially, when used by children, it is advisible to make it safe by ensuring purity of the water.
  • The quality of the swimming water is tested and evaluated according to its microbiological parameters - E-coli and intestinal enterococci.

    These indicators have limit values that can not be exceeded so that they do not endanger human health while swimming.

    According to the Cabinet of Ministers Regulations No. 692 (01.12.2017.):

    • E-coli (KVV / 100 ml) should not exceed 1000;
    • Intestinal eneterococci (KVV / 100 ml) should not exceed 300;

  • The sample should be taken in a sterile container.
    Those containers are free of charge in the laboratory. If there is no opportunity to arrive at the laboratory, then make a sterile container yourself (for example, a heated glass jar or bottle).
    The sample should be delivered to the laboratory within 12-16 hours.

Swimming pool water analysis

  • Swimming pool owners should regularly do monitoring of the pool water purity. Public pools are controlled by their maintainers which are controlled by Health Inspectorate in accordance with the Regulation of the Republic of Latvia.
    Private swimming pools are maintained by their owners and therefore sometimes there is a lack of an adequate supervision.
  • The quality of the water in the swimming pool is supervised and evaluated according to its chemical and microbiological parameters according to the Regulations of the Cabinet of Ministers No. 37 (13.01.2009.):

    A complete analysis could not be made, but depending on the visual assessment of the pool water sample, you can choose indicators that are more relevant to each of individual cases.

  • The sample should be taken in a chemicaly pure 0.5L plastic bottle and in a 0.5L sterile container. We provide sample containers free of charge in the laboratory.

    If there is no possibility to arrive at the laboratory, then make a sterile container yourself (for example, a glass jar or a glass bottle with a cap).

    Volume of the container 0.5L. The sample should be taken in a clean plastic containers with a volume of 10L.

    The sample should be delivered to the laboratory within 12-16 hours.
